mick d,
From what I've learnt in these last 2 years that I've been smoking in the closet and now that I'm coming out of it, I can tell you that closet smokers find problems where they don't exist. In fact we care too much about the fact that we smoke and we convince ourselvs that other people also care as much as we do about it. I'm not saying that your friends and family might like the fact that you smoke... probably most of them will not like it, but the thing is that they will also not hate it as you may think.
My situation was hard too and still is (althought less and less), I'm in the middle of an anti-smoking family and I still managed to come out of the closet. The thing is that you have to gain confidence in yourself and don't let the people around you "control" your life. You are a human being like them, you have the right to do what you want, you are no different then millions of smokers in the world, you have the right to smoke. People around you will not like it, but they will get used to it. I'm sure that the people that you think that would hate to see you smoking are or have been in touch with other smokers durring their life and they don't hate those smokers as human beings just because of it...
