I don't think I ever considered this (consciously at least) but after reading your post I caught myself thinking about it a couple of times while I was smoking. I'd say I usually hold my smoke for 3-5 seconds before exhaling. The major exceptions are the first couple of cigarettes I smoke right after opening my eyes in the morning, any cigarette I need really badly, and most cigarettes I smoke when I'm very relaxed--usually at the end of the day. With all of those, I tend to hold my smoke much longer--I haven't timed it, but 10-20 seconds or so sounds right I guess.
With cigarettes I really need to smoke, I'm just trying to squeeze as much nicotine as possible out of each pull. The same is true for my first couple of the day, though those and the ones I smoke when I'm particularly relaxed are usually cigarettes I especially enjoy and savor the taste of. I find I enjoy the taste of a cigarette most when I take a very long, slow pull, hold the smoke for a while, then exhale verrrry slowly through my nose. There aren't many things I can think of that I enjoy more.
