hello fellow latin music lovers,
this is a call, to plan an awarness organization to help latin female singers & entertainers have a more equal footing in radio & internet rotations and consequently increase cd sales, and live gig opportunities.
over the past few years i have become acutely aware that in the latin music industry, no matter how talented (and beautiful) the ladies are, many of them are never able to attain a viable music career. it is quite painful to see them surpassed by male entertainers of mediocre, boring, or sometimes flat out, no talent. there have been literally 1000's of supertalented latin female singers that have disappeared for one reason or another without a trace.
once more, many times latin female singers are denied radio airplay with obviously superior songs, and as a direct consequence their cd sales and live gig opportunities are usually little to non-existence. the program directors in charge of this whole chain of events, usually do not even bother to listen to the material on the album at all. in addition many latin music festivals do not even considering hiring women with the excuse that they don't "draw" and would rather have a completely unknown male band. this disparity in hiring practices could be interpreted as violating local and federal laws.
i have been a fan of female singers since 1979 when jewel blanch introduced me to country music. Then in '81 the landmark hit by the go gos, "our lips are sealed" (the first all female band to hit #1 on billboard's album chart), really got me to collecting female music. starting with rocio durcal in '85 i became a big fan of the latin females. in '89 selena introduced me to tejano. lately i was introduced to christian music by superchic. the pattern...?? i have always been drawn into different musical genre's by the female vocalists/bands.
since 1985 i have notice that music has become more about image than substance. for example a lot of guy groups referring to themselves as the bad boys of such and such, then creating an image or persona to reflect this. female "music" is many times based on just that...the beautiful music itself. many fans since the 80's have tragically chosen image over the music. shouldn't it "be about the music"??
I AM IN THE FORMATIVE STAGES OF CREATING AN AWARENESS ORGANIZATION to get the industry (including labels, studios, radio/internet stations, booking agents, clubs, promoters, etc); general public; media; women's groups; and even the fans themselves more in tune to these mostly un-noticed trends and tendencies within the industry.
i would like to approach certain entities and organizations already in existence to help them adjust their practices relating to featuring; playing music of; or hiring trends, to better help their female entertainers. if i can not find any of them to co-operate i am willing to form an entirely separate organization solely for the promotion of some of music's most gifted and talented members.....namely the ladies.
i will not be able to do this on my own and will need the help of as many of the female entertainers to spread awareness to their musical peers, industry associates, and individual fanbases, friends, and family. i will need the help of anyone who has ever loved a female singer or one of their songs such as "amor etern" by rocio durcal , "como la flor" by selena, "cucuru paloma" by lola beltran, or "vida es un carnival" by celia cruz. no matter if you are within the industry, or just a fan, young or old, male or female it will be a tough struggle, as are most noble causes. what stands in the balance are: literally the careers of many a talented and beautiful latin female singer.
