That scene was actually filmed in a desolate part of California
called Lost Hills.
It still looks pretty much like that today.
My dad was an airplane mechanic working in that area then
and helped convert an old naval training plane into the crop
duster seen in the movie.
I'm told that I got to visit the set along with children of the
crew and from neighboring schools. But I don't remember it.
