He was clever, had an inscrutable oriental mind solving mysteries. There was the element of comedic relief with his sons, Son #1 or Son #2, etc., or in the great comedic Mantan Moreland, with wide bulging eyes(although, today it could set race relations back 50 years)in scary situations a la Lou Costello. Although, much funnier.
There were six novels. I've read them all, some good, some great.
The movies are pretty good. Treasure Island has a great seance scene and a couple mind-reading scenes. Murder Over New York is another good one. Overall, none of them could be made today for obvious reasons.
