"The 9th Guest"- This one was an ok watch. Good murder mystery. Didn't really get the feel of a "dark house" though. Worth a watch but I wouldn't go to too much trouble to find it.
"The Bat Whispers"- Whew, I wish I had not been so excited over one positive review. I thought this film was pretty much a stinker. It was made in 1930, an early "talkie", and the unpolished aspect of film making at this point in time really shows. There was a maid character that was thrown in as comic relief and man was she annoying!!! Gosh, that character killed the film for me. She was always being a big "fraidy cat" and squalling and taking on...over acting! I didn't get a good feel with who the characters were or what their intent was as they popped in and out of the movie. I thought the character development was terrible. The good aspects of the film were the film appearances of "the bat". He could be considered a bit creepy for 1930 and they did have a stormy setting in a dark house but I do not recommend this movie.
"The Secret Of The Blue Room"- The best of the three films for sure. Good atmosphere, good dark house setting, good backstory, fine acting. It is a very short film at around 66 minutes. It gets right into the action. There are a couple of subplots that try to thrown you off the trail of what is really going on. I like the whole mystery of the film and the possible ghostly aspect but was just a little let down with the resolution and conclusion. It felt somewhat rushed. To be expected though with that short run time. I guess it may have been a good little shocker for 1933. Tame by today's standards. I'd recommend it.
