The Devil Commands (1941)- Finally finished the Boris Karloff 6-pack. This was a very good film and probably the second best on the set just a tick behind "The Man With Nine Lives". This one had a bizarre premise but it was fun! Communicating with the dead with brain waves!
Murder! (1930)- Trying to watch most of Hitchcock's British features. I must admit, this one was a struggle to get through. I felt it was too long and it was not engaging for me at all early on. It picked up some once we got to the jury scenes and was pretty good afterward during the investigation but all in all it was a letdown
I have only seen ONE Hitchcock film that I DID NOT like and that was "The Paradine Case". This was not as bad as Paradine but it is near the bottom if I were to create a ranking.
House Of Frankenstein (1944)- I didn't really think this was a very good film for the Frankenstein series. They tried to connect all of the Universal monsters into this film and it felt like it just had too much going on. I just didn't think it had much too add to the series.
Whistle And I Will Come To You (1968)- A short film, running about 42 minutes. I friend showed this to me a few months back. I was really captivated by it. Thought about it, the content, the story, the ending, the simplicity. It just really is a good little piece of cinema and the thing is...it is very basic. 9 out of 10 people that have seen tons of modern ghost films would scoff at this simple story and brush it off as nothing but this is just what I enjoy about film.
The premise: A skeptical old man finds a whistle with an inscription: "Quis est iste qui venit" ("Who is this who is coming?")
Of course he does blow the whistle. A spirit of some sort begins to stalk his mind. It is sort of creepy to think about and I thought the actor did a good job with it. This would be a good Halloween ghost story for kids. It will scare them... but maybe not too bad.
