I watch the 1920 version (silent) starring John Barrymore. While I am not really a fan of watching silent films, I do try to see some of the more important entries, but they are a bit of a slog to get through for me. I just don't have enough patience for a film with no sound. Although, when I am done I can find appreciation in what I have just watched. Barrymore's portrayal was excellent and the makeup effects of Mr. Hyde were very good!
On a side note, while I was looking up some of the actors, it was sad to see that supporting actress Martha Mansfield died three years later at age 24 in a freak accident when her wardrobe caught fire on set.
Phantom Of The Opera (1943)- I watched this version starring Claude Rains. It was made well and I liked the color in the film but overall I thought it was a letdown. It doesn't hold a candle to the Lon Chaney 1925 version. The "unmasking scene" and the makeup effects were very tame. Not scary or gruesome at all. Someone dropped the ball there.
