Gear Box Replacement

Hello All,
More of an owner than enthusiast here, but I noticed a loud whirring sound when I turn my 1995 Discovery I, and my mechanic is telling me I require a new gear box. I've researched this sort of thing as best as I am able, and the pricing on these things seems to vary widely, but as I confuse myself more and more every day, I have to ask: are a gear box and a steering box the same thing?
And, if anyone is feeling particularly magnanimous, can they suggest a few online shops which might sell this item cheaper than some others?

PS - if I replace this part, should I also replace its seals at the same time?
