99 Rover Door Fault

Could someone help? My drivers door is closed, but my instrument panel on dash says that my door is open and the dome lights are on. I have tried slamming the door shut this doesnt help. Is there a way to bypass this? Do I need a new latch? Is this a common problem? Thank you.
