I have been going through the same problem. The old die hards tell me that when the tach fails it is the alternator. I have found that when the battery drops below 13.3 volts, the tach stops. Now, most will tell you that the alternator is failing. I have replaced the alternator and the negative ground wire to the battery and the problem still continues. I would have the alternator checked by a good expert with it under a full load test. I hope this will give one direction to solve your problem. I'll keep you posted on my end...It's like the Beatles song Day Tripper.
