freelander water loss

Hi All
My 1.8s Freelander (2001) X has just developed a water leak, I have no mechanical knowledge at all and cant determine the source of the leak, except to say it appears to be low down on the left side of the engine (as you look fromthe front) the water drips onto the lower cross member?
I have checked the dipstick and there does not appear to be any water in the oil, I dont trust or can afford main dealer repairs, anyone give me any advice or perhaps a clue.
