Importing from Kenya

Im currently living in Kenya and have come across some great deals on some
109's and newer defenders. I know before 1980 the EPA has no restrictions but after that the vehicle must comply with US emisions. Im wondering if it's worth trying to convert to meet US emisions? and any advice for hot
spots to inspect on a pre 1980 109. Thanks,
