I feel the pinch too, not so much with backbar but with retail products. I don't see how someone makes a lot of money retailing because the minute I sell something at a 100% markup, I have to turn around and pay the 50% wholesale price again to restock it. But I do really believe in the skincare line and makeup line I sell, it is just so expensive. I spent more on that (if you count displays) than the rest of my shop combined when setting up.
To answer your question, ASH, I feel like in order to be profitable we should do what our license allows us to do. It will help us reach a bigger clientele base. That said, I only offer the quick, focused facials that I like to do along with chemical peels. I have kind of a "no-nonsense" philosophy and I draw those kinds of customers to me because of that. If someone wants a luxurious facial they can go to an expensive day spa. But if they want to fix their skin, they come to me.
