Posted by Marjorie Bree Leona was a loving, devoted, kind, and generous mother and grandmother. Her family was at her bedside when she passed away June 27, 2002 at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, CA. Leona was born March 26, 1920 in Tiawah, OK where she grew up as the middle child with her six brothers. In 1943, she postponed her education to become a teacher, enlisting in the United States Navy. She was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Corona, CA. There she met and married, her husband, John Hyler Bree, president of the Italian Vineyard Company, on September 23, 1944. They remained married until his death in 1983. Upon Hylers retirement in 1944, Leona and Hyler lived in Piedmont and San Marino, CA. In 1948, Leona and Hyler purchased the Sunnyslope Ranch in Elderwood, CA, present site of the Woodlake Lions Rodeo. About the same time, they purchased a cabin in Mineral King, CA from Tom Davis. A new cabin was constructed in 1957, which continues to serve as a summer home for Leonas children and grandchildren. During her active years in Mineral King, Leona hiked extensively with her children well into her fifties. In 1952, Leona and Hyler purchased a home in Visalia, CA, where they raised their five children. In 1990, Leona moved to Paso Robles, CA where she lived until January 2002, when she moved to her youngest sons ranch in Santa Ysabel, CA. While residing in Visalia, Leona was an active member of the Kaweah Chapter of the Daughter's of the American Revolution, a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and a student of the Rosicrucian Society. Leona completed the highest level of education offered by the Rosicrucian Society. In addition to her studies, she spent several years compiling her family genealogy, tracing her lineage to the Mayflower. She had a special interest in the Civil War and possessed many letters from relatives who served in Americas deadliest conflict. Leona traveled the world extensively from 1959 until her final journeys to China and Egypt, thirty years later. Leona Bree is survived by her five children: John Bree of Riverbank, CA, Bill Bree of Visalia, CA, Donn Bree of Santa Ysabel, CA, Mary Bree Wills of Brentwood, NH, and Marjorie Bree Silva of San Diego, CA; eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Leona wished that in lieu of flowers remembrances be made to the Mineral King Preservation Society or the Daughters of the American Revolution. Private family services are scheduled for July 13. Burial will take place in the Visalia Public Cemetery. Link: Granny (BREE) Waller!!
