Still a great voice, and, as it turns out, a guitar maestro aswell! A decent size crowd considering it was Reading Festival weekend, maybe a hundred people. They were a bit reserved - I don't know if that's normal for the venue, I'm more of a Joiners man, or because they had sat through three support acts - but generally well-wishing, and Tom worked them like the experienced pro he is.
I confess I don't know the post-Inspirals stuff, although I had heard about Hole, which was one of the best tracks in the set. Tracks I did know included Saturn 5, Directing Traffic (made my day!), Two Worlds Collide, This Is How It Feels, Sackville and Dragging Me Down - worth the entrance fee alone! There wasn't a bad song in the set, and I'm kicking myself for not getting a cd, now.
Shame a drunken fan soured things halfway through by getting on stage and falling over Tom's other instruments, damaging at least one guitar. To be fair to the staff, I think a lot of people thought this drunken fan was actually a friend of Tom's, because Tom seemed to address him by name earlier in the set. The bloke's mate then started a bit of heckling - I got the impression some of these had not been to a gig since 1990. If they were expecting a band they should have done their homework! There was no need to keep apologising for your reaction, Tom, you were amazingly calm, under the circumstances! I hope there was no lasting damage done. You just don't need that nonsense when you are on stage alone in front of a large audience.
I just hope one drunk and one gobshite don't put Tom off coming back to Southampton.
