Posted by titojt Interesting storm (or storms) was Dadang in 1971- it backtracked from the South China Sea back to Southern Tagalog area (but JTWC considered this a regenerated typhoon Katring that passed Central-Northern Luzon earlier. Imagine if a typhoon as strong as Yoling or Sening would do such as loop!) The NCR was lucky in not having stong typhoons hit from the West....

Wow Dominic you got a lot of info on those three typhoons there... While I had experienced 1964's Dading and 1967's Welming, please do not get the idea that I am that old (he he). I was not even in school then when Dading hit but I recall how bad it was. Welming however was the one that triggered my interest in typhoons. I was in Grade 1 then and I was playing crystal ball and I "predicted" having a strong typhoon hit our place, and 2 days later, Welming struck. I felt, so innocently, that I was the one that caused it, and was depressed for days, until my dad asked me why, and I told him, after which he explained what causes typhoons. So I researched and later found out Welming had been in the Samar area already when I was doing my crystal ball thing. Oh well….
On archive information, I recall PAGASA had annual reports (stocked at UP library) which described memorable typhoons that struck the country. I remember reading some for 1964, 1967, 1970, etc. Also the UP library has microfilmed old newspapers which covered periods when these storms struck...(I recall Manila Times skipped publishing the day Dading struck, and published the next day how everything stopped when Dading hit- believe me storms were far more destructive in old times of low technology and limited development).
Additional storms that hit NCR- Konsing in 1972- jtwc classed it as a cat 1 typhoon in Bicol and just a severe TS in Manila, but Pagasa classed it as a 200 kph howler in Legaspi and 130 kph cat 1 in Manila- lots of rain also since it struck in June. Pagasa initially classed Konsing as just a severeTS (110 kph) but I guess it went through an explosive deepening phase so that just 1 bulletin later, Pagasa upgraded it to 200 kph!
Saling (Dan) in 1989- cat 1 typhoon affecting Cavite-Southern NCR. Lots of damage in lowland Cavite towns...
But then again Tropical Storm Barang in Oct. 1972, intensified into a cat 3 howler and slowed down in the middle of South China sea near lat. 15... This generated a storm surge that struck Cavite towns with great damage- again we are lucky nothing similar has happened again..Before this Barang passed Mindoro and caused strong Southwest monsoon winds and rain in the NCR...(I wonder why this was so when Barang was Southwest of NCR then?)
Until our next exchange ...
