Posted by Olivia Herriford on 10/4/2001, 3:36 pm A quick comment of the feminine qualities needed in the work environment. I'm doing some research that includes emotional intelligence in the workplace. There are four areas of EI: self awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Studies conducted over that last five years has shown that IQ is the barrier of entry into certain work environments, but after that, it is EI that differentiates stars from average performers. The leading proponents of this concept (men) tell us that neither men nor women have a monopoly on EI. But I beg to differ. Women are usually more aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and manage them accordingly. Though we tend to avoid office politics, we are usually more aware of "what's going on". And then there's relationship management, a capability that has long been relegated to the low-paying roles of customer service and support overly represented by women. And since they still refuse to pay equitably for it, organizations are paying millions to automate it. Now similar skills are showing up as essential to the partnerships that are crucial for doing business in the new economy. So it may not be so much what feminine qualities are needed rather what women can bring and coach to all. We're getting there! Peace! Olivia
First of all, thanks for starting this dialogue, Lynn. It's needed.
