Thanks, although if the original poster has no welding background she probably still won't get it. That's not an assumption on my part about her intelligence, rather, it's a reflection of the attitudes that a lot of people still have about tradecraft. The problem with a question like that, people who have no exposure to the work that craftspeople do assume that we're meatheads who went to trade school because we weren't smart enough for, or couldn't get into a REAL college. The assumption is, what we do is so simple that understanding can be had from reading a 2-page pamphlet. What they don't realize is, if you're talking to someone who does understand, you're better off just admitting you don't understand, instead of trying to fake it.
If I were the interviewer, she'd more impress me by admitting she doesn't know about welding, but would like to learn... rather than hearing her parrot a definition.
