You can't go wrong with argon (really, I think any inert). You can use blends, but there is a trade-off. Reactive gases weaken the coalesced material, and cause spatter. The level of undesirable characteristics is directly proportional with the concentration of reactive gases in your blend; more reactive gases = uglier and weaker, more inerts = prettier and stronger. So you have to decide what is most important: mechanical properties and appearance, or cost. The concentration of reactive gases you can get away with also depends on what process you're using.
As far as current goes, it'll be hotter than what you would use for mild steel. It'll depend on the outfit your using. You're best off answering this yourself by trial-and-error. Get some scraps and make some coupons.
