Chuck, please rethink your plan. The rafters due to their location should not be a problem since any fire that high is out of control anyway. The paneled walls is bad (flameable)forever and due to the ease of it hiding a smoldering fire. Welding processes and grinding preparations has normal by-products: Very hot sparks, molten slag, hot metal waste items, open flame, and all of such volume you may not see everwhere they fly off too. Store the supplies & equip in there and work outside. Pour a concrete slab near the garage; make a cover over it (plenty of fresh air & light)and still have that fire extinguisher ready. Heat & cold ain't bad like FIRE !
