Debbie. Good question Debbie. Please look into the following suggested sites where you may research their welding dictionary. In my general terms-the root pass forms the first full weldment layer placed in the weld joint. On a wide root opening, it may require more than one weld pass to tie this root layer into both sides of the joint. So, in general terms, the root pass is also known as the root layer. A weld pass is a single bead of weld that extends along the length of the joint. A weld layer ties both sides (across the width) of the joint together and may be a single bead or multiple passes. Many times you may see typical description as: the root layer, fill layer(s), and the cap layer.
