Posted by Rick I actually used to do this in another life when I worked for Stelo Pipe and Tube in Welland Ontario many years ago. What we found worked 100% of the time was to use E7024 SMAW Electrode 5/32" Diameter. I would weld starting from one edge and go in approx 2" or 50 cm and then start from the other edge and weld acrocc to that smaller weld. This way the welds never ended on the edge which could cause it to crack while being hot or cold formed. Also remeber to run this electrode on Straight Polarity "electrode negative" for best results. E7024 is a very inexpensive Flat only electrode used primarily for structural steel fabrication, it has a Iron Powder coating and a very high deposition rate for great productivity.
