The smooth arc and the forceful arc are different inductance ranges. Forceful arc wont adjust to arc length as much - more penetration and more tendency to undercut.Sounds to me like u got a dc transformer rectifier welder.Unless it says or has a switch to go from ac to dc it is dc.
