If you could provide a little more info, I may be able to help.
#1: What grade of 1/2" plate A36, A572-50, A514 etc.
#2: Why are you plating the box tube, is this to increase it's load capacity?
#3: I don't thing a pre-load is required, a good welding procedure that works around a neutral axis will keep residule stresses to a minimum.
