Is there a single official definition of weld-inches or inches of weld used in the estimating field. I could see either measuring the total length of all of the passes or the finished length of the weld. Even then, this would not account for the cross section of the weld. Furthermore, is there some method by which the actual circumferential inches of weld on a given pipe diameter and wall thickness are all equated back to some reference groove size or pipe diameter and wt so that all the welding on a piping job (involving NPS 1 to NPS 42) can be stated as a single number of weld-inches and then multiplied by the appropriate welder-welder helper rate schedule? Your enlightenment will be greatly appreciated.
