Hi Dale
My grandfather was Gladwin Henry Petley who married Isabel Douglas and lived at Tairua. They had eight children. My great grandfather was Captain John Alexander Petley, 58th Regiment, married to Mere Kingi. he and Mere had two children - Gladwin Henry Petley and John Petley. Captain Petley's photo was on the wall at the Auckland War Memorial Museum at one stage. My mother used to tell me that he came to NZ on the "Racehorse." We are interested in finding out more about Mere Kingi. After Captain Petley died she lived at Te Karo, just up from Tairua. I think she had another child. My mother said Mere was of Ngati Awa descent but we are unsure about that.
Francis Bennett wrote a book called "Tairua" which has some information about the Petley family in it but we would like to know more about Mere. I have read the online information about Wiremu Kingi Te Rangitake. My brother says that he heard that Captain Petley gave his first born child to the Waitara Maoris.
Thanks for replying to my posting.
Shirley
