His ears tipped slightly backward at her initial sharp reply, but his expression remained placid. It was obvious that she was upset, and clearly that emotion was seeking an outlet. If it was only through giving her a target for anger that he could aid her, then he would do so without complaint.
His chocolate eyes did leave her briefly, however, to cast over the landscape. Not a place for laughter...was there then some special significance to this terrain? Sarge could not say, being new to the land, but any questions he might have regarding this place would not be asked of the female before him. He was not about to obtain aid from those who needed help themselves.
At her apology, he inclined his head slightly, dismissing the words. She had no reason to apologize, for he had taken no offense. Her claim that he would be lost with landmarks for her story was also met with a repeated tip of his head, for that he could not argue. But simply because he would not know of the lands or creatures she spoke of, did not meant the words could not be spoken.
"I cannot claim to have years, ma'am, but I do have several moments now." Truer words had not been spoken, for given the german shepherd's failing physical condition, it was unlikely he would survive the winter. But it was not winter yet.
"Perhaps the fact that I am a stranger, unfamiliar with these places and names, is exactly why my ear might be of value. I can hold no prejudgements or misconceptions save those which you speak of."
Truthfully, the german shepherd doubted he could be of any aid beyond a sympathetic listener, if the story was as complicated as she implied. But sometimes problems became clearer and less over-whelming when they were spoken of, and being forced to dilute her tale to its barest essence might offer the despairing wolfess some clarity. Of course, it might not, and by no means would the german shepherd press the matter much further than he already had. If she did not wish to speak, he would leave her in silence. As deep-rooted as Sarge's desire to help those in need was, he could only offer aid to those who wanted it.
