Sarge's ears quivered slightly at her soft whisper, but he caught the words she spoke. And to his mind, despite the long convoluted tale of history she had woven for him, regardless of the fate of Lestat, of Toric, of any of her young, that single statement was at the crux of all of the wolf's problems.
I don't know.
An answer one way would free her to take a firm stand against the return of Lestat, and answer to the other would permit her to risk her heart for her lover's sake once more....but neither decision could be made until she knew her own heart.
Though Redd tried to soften her statement by recalling some of Toric's good deeds, Sarge recognized it as being more to remind herself...to try to convince herself...of her feelings. He smiled faintly, indulgantly, as she mentionned the humour and favours the collie brought to her, but it was impossible not to notice a repeated lapse into the past tense.
"A shared past might provide a solid foundation for a future, ma'am, but like all things, time will wear upon it, and unless reinforced constantly, that built upon it will fall." The german shepherd observed softly. "Perhaps determining if your house has been built up solidly enough over the present will help you determine your path in the future."
