He could see only a little of her inner turmoil reflected in her expression, the racing of her mind along down so many different trails flashing ever so briefly behind the wolf's eyes. Eventually, the german shepherd knew she would finally come to realize whatever truth belonged to her...but the journey to have her mind and heart align themselves could be a difficult one.
The dog inclined his head slightly in acknowledgement of her words, yet for a moment it seemed he would not answer the question she had so softly placed before him, instead offering a soft agreement to the statement which followed.
"Perhaps." Sarge still did not truly think of his words as wise, however, for all he had really done was simply provide a mirror to reflect the wolf's own thoughts. But there was little point to arguing the matter.
The dog was silent for a moment, then finally answered the question the wolf had spoken first. "She betrayed me." His soft tenor voice was kept neutral as he spoke, and he could have been speaking about the weather for all the inflection in his tone. But a flicker of grief danced across the liquid depths of his eyes. Even now, he could remember the colour of blood spilled over the earth, the scent of gunpowder and death, and the searing bite of metal in his body...as real as if it were happening at this moment. As if in response to the memory of the past, his shoulder gave a gentle throb of pain, and he shifted his weight slightly. He forced the past back into the part of his mind where he kept it locked down tight, and managed a tight smile. "But I believe I was trying to aid you with your problems, not burden you with mine."
