This experience happened down river from here. Sometime around the year 1977 or so. I'm living down there and befriend an old guy that lived there. When I met him, he was in his late 80s. I never asked him, but he must have been born in the 1890s. So if he were alive today, he would be about 130 years old. But he lived close to 100 years anyway. I always used to get him to talk about the old times. He was always very patient with me and polite. I learned a lot from him. His name was Kriska Gregary. I'm talking to him one time and he told me about a statue of a woman and a baby she was holding in her arms that was way up this river out in the middle of nowhere. He said it represented a woman and her child that had starved to death a long long long time ago. I was a little skeptical to say the least. I was thinking how could a statue be doing so far out in the woods, but I took it all in. Then one day I got the chance to go moose hunting with two men from down that country. And they were heading up that very river. I still remember one of the guy's names. His name was Pitka Evans. I said to make sure you tell me and show me the statue when we go by it with the boat. We travel all day long in our boat and make camp for the night. In the morning we put our canoe in and left with that. It was a flat back Grumman with a six horse. It had gotten too shallow for the big boat. We traveled all day again and finally reached old woman rock. When I saw it I really almost couldn't believe my eyes. It was a statue of a woman cradling a baby in her arms. You could see her long hair the baby and all. About 300 feet tall. So, as we go by, I wanted to stop but they wouldn't for out of respect. But as we were going by, they put crackers and tobacco and some other food in the water of the river. They told me she would give them game if they did that. We hadn't seen a moose or anything that whole trip. As soon as we went around the bend of the river, two moose were standing right on the side of the river. It was a cow and a calf, so we left them alone. The story goes that I was told by Kriska, the old guy, is that her husband went hunting and never returned so her and her infant child starved. He also told me that her husband's statue was back a little ways in the woods from where she was and he had fallen over when World War two started. I didn't see the statue of him. He said that when the next world war starts she will fall over. According to folklore. I saw some guys from down that way this summer and they told me that the baby was beginning to crumble and fall apart. The only white man that told me he saw that statue was Harry Wrase. So that's the story. If you want to know more about it then you will have to talked to the people down river in sleetmute about it. I didn't give the name of the river out of respect for them. Theres more to the true story but Ill hold it with that for now.
