Cage's own performance indications specify that "the work may be performed by any instrumentalist or combination of instrumentalists and last any length of time." However, the work was dedicated to the work's first performer, David Tudor, who performed the premiere in 4'33 sitting alone at the piano. He also closed and opened the lid twice during the performance to indicate movement intervals. I know of no performances with piano and orchestra, or indeed with any other instruments, though I do not doubt that some must have taken place.
I am slightly bothered by the sentence "claimed that its motivation was an attempt to demonstrate that there are sounds to be heard in a concert hall full of audience even when no music is played." Perhaps I am wrong, but I do not believe Cage ever "claims" anything nor that he used the words "motivation" or "demonstrate" in his writings, unless negatively. I think of his attitude as reflecting his realisation that we can create conditions of group meditation in which not "making" music can conduce to experience of the acoustic properties of being within and without. But in 1966 he said "I don't need that piece today.”
