However, I would add that it goes the other way as well. Whilst preparing CD materials to store on my media player, I have encountered an uncomfortably high number of CDs whose waveforms are clipped, often quite heavily (remarkably, several of these are Mercury "Living Presence", whose digital remastering was supposedly carried out with such tender, loving care).
Ironically, on quite a few of these, the maximum level is not 0 dB., but around -0.5 to -1 dB. This suggests that the remastering engineer HAS noticed the clipping, and thought that dropping the level a notch would be an adequate remedy - which (need I say?) it isn't!
