Re: John Quinn's review of Rubbra's 4th Symphony (Somm)
I totally agree with you Colin. I seem to recall that Robert Layton, in his booklet note for the Lyrita release I think, suggested that the symphony did not reflect at all the conflict that was going on when Rubbra composed the work. Shortly afterwards I heard the work broadcast on Radio 3, after which the announcer commented 'Blood, toil, tears and sweat (?)' in relation to the conclusion of the symphony - I was inclined to agree with him.
