Dynamics in a score can be a read herring - just because Tchaikovsky writes (say) ffff we cannot be sure that he wants it louder than another composer who only uses three. Of course its a scale of relative dynamics. Just because Currentzis manages to get to "11" on the volume control doesn't make it better for me. Its about the journey of arriving at 11. If you are being emotionally hothoused with every phrase manipulated and given "meaning" from the very opening the ultimate climax is just another emotional blurt on an undifferentiated landscape.
Next we'll be saying that playing symphonies from memory makes a difference ...... oh we're doing that already as well. Pass me the emperor's clothes!
