Janine Micheau (soprano)
Recording Venue: Paris
This work has long been an obsession of mine, and the performance by Fournet/OCL and Micheau, despite its inferior sound - it now sounds far superior in the Decca Eloquence restoration, to judge by the excerpts given by Presto - easily eclipses all the others. Göran's observation that "Jeannine Micheau’s singing at the climax produces goose-pimples" exactly corresponds to my own experience. I may stir up a hornets' nest if I add that the recording by Renée Fleming strikes me as the worst I have ever heard.
