It's certainly true that diametrically opposed views about the same performance/recording can be encountered. For example, the Penguin Guide gave Bruno Walter's Sony stereo recording of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony a rosette, praising its "glorious strings and richly sonorous brass".
The American Record Guide Bruckner Overview says: "The brass are ungainly and overbearing, the acoustic as dry as dust".
You couldn't get much more opposed than that!
