Like many on here, the Isle of the Dead is (IMHO!) as stunning piece of musical imagination and I was very interested to read the "blind" opinions of Messrs Moore, Lace and Barnard on so many recordings, my only complaint being that the comparative list omitted one of my own favourite recordings, namely Maazel with the Berlin PO.
Your point about the missing pages of the score is interesting and is not one I had come across before. It is sobering to note, on this occasion, that posterity has largely chosen to ignore Rachmaninov's final wishes and perhaps I, in my fairly untutored musical ways, am pleased as a result, even if only because I am grateful for every page of this magnificent score !! However, others may feel differently ....
