Your point that all three successive symphonies were written contiguously stands, John, but I suppose the debate hinges upon what one would call "protracted": all three were written over a period of sixteen months (the Fifth) to two years, which is, I suppose relatively slow and the fact that the Sixth was the least revised suggests that it was the symphony with which Bruckner was happiest, no?
