For all the quality technically of many of their recordings I think throughout their existence Chandos has been especially guilty of this with artists and repertoire pushed together just because conductor "X" is deemed a specialist in the music of country "Y". Personally I feel Richard Hickox was vastly overrated. I remember hearing from a colleague in an orchestra he became a principal conductor of that as far as they were concerned the best thing about him was the recording contract he brought with him. Many will disagree with this view but I cannot think of a single Hickox recording where multiple versions exist where I would choose him over all others.
Its a lazy A&R approach by record labels and Chandos continue it to this day; where once it was Hickox, Handley and Thompson its now Gamba, Gardiner and Davis. A little more judicious selecting of specific artists for specific repertoire would go a long way in my book....
