This recording was almost unanimously praised when it first appeared, and justifiably so. I'm not very keen on miniaturized Beethoven: it seems to me that throughout his life he pushed for more powerful orchestras and instruments, and that the music is itself evidence of this. Even the great Peter Serkin couldn't sell me on a period instrument opus 106,, and HIP Beethoven symphony cycles are usually weakest when they come to the boundary-bursting 9th\. But the Järvi performance is so attuned to the Promethean energies of the 3rd that the small orchestra makes you forget that it's small.
It comes with a very good 8th too.
