Re: Shostakovich 11
I must be psychic or something - one of my girlfriends thought I was, trouble is she spelled and pronounced it psycho -but sometime last night, a voice in my head said, So you rate the Shostakovich 1? I let it play in my head for a while and I came to the conclusion I had made a massive over-calculation. Yes, you're right, Michael, 'tis folly to regard it above those you mentioned. Sargent was a regular Melbourne visitor as well. I recall an Emporer with Muindru Katz. I went with my dear mother...I think it may be a case that the experiences you and Jan describe when you first heard this work are a prerequisite for liking it. I've never felt the awe you two describe: all I know for sure is that after the opening hush - which is indeed impressive - it alternates between banality and bombast to my ears. By the way, how do you and Jan rate the 4th?
