Helena Munktell's Violin Sonata
Posted by Nils-Göran Olve on February 24, 2021, 7:02 am
I very much agree with Richard Hanlon's review of Bis's CD of chamber works by Helena Munktell. Readers should also listen to an alternative recording of her violin sonata, recorded just a few months later by Cecilia Zilliacus and Bengt Forsberg and already released on dB Productions ("Swedish Violin Treasures"). It is interesting to compare how two duos, without a performance tradition or having heard each other, provide different perspectives on this long-forgotten major piece. Tobias Ringborg also led a revival of Munktell's hour-long opéra comique I Firenze for a broadcast which should be issued on disc. And if you want to combine the two duo teams, Ringborg with Bengt Forsberg can be heard and seen together in other violin-and-piano repertoire on an hour-long concert which is available on YouTube.
