Dear Mr. Dressler,
By a very unusual route I have seen your letter about Phyllis Tate.
My husband, Leo Collins, had many conversations with Ms. Tate when we lived
in London for 8 months in 1969. He had wanted her to be one of the composers
commissioned to write a choral work for women's voices.
but as far as I can discover this did not come to fruition. The works that
were included were published by the E. C. Schirmer Music Company, Boston,
Massachusettts. I don't know if they are still in business but should be in
some archive. Leo enjoyed his conversations with Ms. Tate very much.
Sorry I can't tell you some good news.
Best Wishes.
Joan D. Collins

Hello Mrs. Collins,
Thank you very much for your message today! I am truly grateful for these
details below about your husband contacting Ms. Tate while in London!
Back in 2000 Alan Poulton had his "Dictionary-Catalog of Modern British
Composers" published in the UK. It is 3 volumes in length, and the section
on Ms. Tate is remarkably long. I'm certain he had several 'helpers' bring
together a wealth of material on the works of the composers he included.
In that book is the following notation below about the particular work he
cites as having a direct connect to Wheelock College. And, hence my attempt
to trace details here in the States for the book I am writing about Ms.
Tate.
Your notes tell of a different story! And for them I am most appreciative.
I am copying Ms. Tate's daughter and son as well as Rob Barnett of the
British Music Society who might be able to help out here. As you can see
I've only some ideas about performances in England--nothing yet in Boston.
And perhaps your details tell why there appear to have been no performances
on the New England coast! I did check the online catalog of E.C. Schirmer
this evening: nothing by Phyllis Tate as her publisher is Oxford University
Press. I will write to them, however, just in case there might be some notes
about having considered the work. If I find out more that might interest
you, I will send them along.
Thank you again for your time and assistance!
Sincerely,
John Dressler
Celia, Colin and Rob: If you might recall anything about the genesis of this
work I would be grateful for you details! Poulton seems to have this
incorrect.
Thanks! John
