Ralph Moore: Le Roi D'ys
Posted by George Melkonian on March 21, 2021, 10:36 pm
I almost fell out of my chair when reading Ralph Moore’s survey of Lalo’s Le Roi D’ys. I actually have an opera in my collection that Ralph doesn’t have, that being the 1954 Dervaux with Nore, Boue and Bianco. Of the six versions that I have of this opera my favorite is the 1973 Dervaux but the earlier versions still provide pleasure for the quality of singing. I had high hopes for the Jordan account when it came out anticipating superb sound from a modern studio recording but I have to agree with Ralph that the male singers just are not up to par. As for the version on the Dynamic label, well, one listen was enough for me. It appears that Ralph is a more tolerant person than I.
