He joined twice. Karl Bohm joined as well. When the New York goons were sent to Germany to dig up dirt on Furtwangler they were informed about Bohm's past. They contacted Bruno Walter, ensconced in Hollywood, about Bohm and because Bohm and Walter had been friends, Bruno said Karl was okay. The goons then continued their witch hunt of Furtwangler. Berta Geissmar's book 'The Baton and the Jackboot' is a must-read for anyone interested in Furtwangler's problems with the Nazis.
My thoughts exactly, Marc. I have always found it ironic that some people who are prepared to ascribe the worst of political motives to Furtwaengler seem to have no problems with Karajan who, unlike Furtwaengler, actually did join the Nazi party.
