Thank you to Ralph Moore for his most interesting survey of the major recordings of Ein Heldenleben. All mine are still boxed up following a relocation, so my urge to have a rummage and compare notes has to be put on hold - although I will be checking out some that didn't make the list - the Belgian National Orchestra with Walter Weller for example. To be fair, I don't remember it being in the front rank...
However, my post is prompted by the distinct memory of applause after the CBSO/Nelsons recording, so a studio recording it is not, I would contend. The good thing is that I don't recall it being as badly afflicted by AN's grunts as some of his other concert recordings. (Valery Gergiev is also a major offender in that respect, but then in my book many of his recordings, studio or in concert, fall at an earlier fence than that!)
