I don't get Chailly's later Brahms cycle, but his earlier one is more 'stately', better paced.
Sanderling is in the top 3 or 4!
I have them both: the second set is slower, more mellow: the Dresden set has more fire. I love them both, but if forced to take one, it would be the Dresden. I'll check out the Steinberg. I have his EMI Steinberg box. He was under-rated.
By the way, I don't 'get' Chailly. I bought his Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner: none of them make sense to me.

No, I have not! I have the Berlin set, and I should have mentioned them in my list of favourites. And Chailly, the first Decca set of the 1990's.
Now I'm off to get Sanderling.
