Vaughan Williams conducts Vaughan Williams (Somm CD)

I greatly enjoyed Nick Barnard's outstanding review of this fascinating 2 CD set, commemorating the composer's 150th Anniversary. As with Nick, Vaughan Williams's own 1946 recording of 'A London Symphony' was a revelation to me, notwithstanding the missing sections. It was as good a performance as I have heard and, for once, I was not acutely aware of the beautifully poetic section, before the Epilogue, which the composer excised in 1936. I totally agree with Nick's suggestion that like an ancient fresco which has missing sections, it is still possible to appreciate the greatness of the performance. Sargent's recording of the 6th symphony in Volume 1 was another revelation to me.
