Certainly Hyperion have maintained a clear label identity from their very earliest releases and there must be concern about how clearly this will be retained. My concern with any such acquisitions is whether the main interest is in cherry-picking material from the existing/back catalogue (I can imagine nominally Decca-badged "big boxes" that turn out to contain Hyperion-sourced recordings) rather than producing much new content of worth. The truth is now under the Universal banner Phillips/Decca/DG are pretty much interchangeable in terms of sound/artists/repertoire. But that is probably as much a function of the modern age and the economics of recording. For sure there is no such thing as the "Decca Sound" or any other now - something I am sure I am not alone in lamenting the loss of.

What thoughts do we have about the acquisition of Hyperion by Universal? I have to say I am apprehensive. Universal have said that they will leave artistic control with Hyperion but time will tell. I used to keenly look forward to releases from Decca and DG but now, not so much. I have not bought a Decca CD for over a year. I don't bother with downloads and have been collecting classical CD's since 1989.
